Varun Thapar is an entrepreneur and the Executive Vice Chairman of the KCT Group of Companies. The great grandson of Karam Chand Thapar, founder of the Thapar Group of Companies, Varun is the fourth generation of his family to be at the helm of the business. His father, Mr. Vikram Thapar, is currently the Chairman of the Company but plays a nonexecutive role, leaving the executive leadership of the businesses to his son.
Thapar completed his education from Brown University, USA, where he double majored in European History and Economics. After a successful consulting stint with the Exeter Group in Boston, MA, Thapar returned to India in 2008 to take over the management of his family business interests.
Over the past decade, with his hands on approach to management, Varun has focused on restructuring the group, growing the core business, and diversifying into new areas. The core business operations of the group – coal logistics, aquaculture and real estate – have grown considerably under his leadership.
Equally keeping an eye on making the Group future ready, he has also spearheaded the Group’s diversification into two new areas: renewable energy, the group having established wind farms across the country; and container and allied products manufacturing.
