Glasgow Gutters: Gutter Repair and Care Across Glasgow and Paisley

If you live anywhere around Glasgow, you know what the rain is like. It settles in for days, comes sideways off the Clyde, and finds every weak spot on a house. The gutters take the brunt of it. When they aren't working, you notice quickly: water sheeting down the front of the house, a dark patch creeping across the bedroom wall, a steady drip onto the path that turns to ice come January.

We're Glasgow Gutters, and gutters are all we do. My name is Glen McGill and I manage the business from our base on Hawkhead Avenue in Paisley. Most of our work is repairing gutters that have started to let people down. We also clean them, fit new ones and replace old systems that are past saving.

Why gutters fail around here
Moss grows well in our damp, mild climate and washes down into the gutter with every heavy shower. Add leaves from the trees in Bishopbriggs, Newton Mearns and the older parts of Paisley, and you get a wet mat that holds water like a sponge. That weight bends brackets, the run loses its fall, and water pools instead of heading for the downpipe. In winter the standing water freezes and tired joints finally give way.

Gutter repair
Most people who call us don't need a whole new system. They need the one they've got fixed properly. We reseal or replace leaking joints, replace bent or rusted brackets and reset sagging runs, repair cracked sections, corners and outlets, and clear or fix blocked and cracked downpipes. An overflowing gutter isn't always a broken one, so we work out the real cause first. If the fascia behind is rotten we'll tell you, because fixing new brackets into rotten timber is a waste of your money. If a repair will sort the problem, we'll repair it. You won't get pushed towards a replacement you don't need.

Why it's worth fixing sooner
A leaking gutter is easy to put off, but the water has to go somewhere. Running down the wall, it soaks into brick or stone, and in older tenements and sandstone villas that can mean damp patches, peeling paint and a musty smell inside. A repair that takes a short visit now is a lot less hassle than chasing damp through a house later.

Gutter cleaning
We clear out moss, leaves and silt, check the outlets and make sure the downpipes run freely, keeping an eye out for loose brackets, leaky joints or cracks while we're up there. Late autumn, once most of the leaves are down, is a sensible time to get them cleared. If trees overhang your roof, or the gutters haven't been touched in a few years, they may need clearing more often than you'd expect.

Gutter installation and new gutters
When a system has reached the end of its life, we install new gutters, whether that means replacing rusted cast iron, swapping brittle plastic that keeps cracking, or guttering a new extension. It's a chance to get the fall, outlets and downpipes right so the whole system drains the way it should.

Signs your gutters need looking at
Water spilling over the front edge in the rain, a drip that always lands in the same place, green or dark streaks down the wall, a gutter that dips in the middle, or damp patches on upper walls inside. If you're seeing any of those, get in touch before the next spell of heavy weather.
