Although bicyclists represent only about 2 percent of road fatalities, bicyclist deaths have increased 25 percent since reaching their lowest point in 2010. A total of 777 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in 2017.
The most recent crash data available shows that at least 939 people were killed in red light running crashes in 2017—a 10-year high and a 28% increase since 2012.
The NSC just released preliminary estimates showing that motor vehicle deaths are projected to dip below 40,000 for the first time since 2015. While it's only a small decrease over last year (and only a projection), remember that these numbers represent lives. I'm happy to see this unsettling trend finally move in the other direction!
