What is the best material for a US flag?

30 March 2020

When shopping for American flag banners, you’ll want to choose a material that works for you. Your flag’s material can be just as vital as the pattern on it. You'd wear different clothes for different kinds of weather, right? So think of where you plan to hoist your flag or banner as well.

Companies that make American flags for sale in the United States use cotton, nylon, or polyester as primary flag-making materials.

You can also go for silk and blends of polyester and cotton. In this quick guide, though, we’ll cover the primary materials for making quality flags.

Here’s a guide on what material to buy, as well as their pros and cons.

Nylon

Nylon does not last as long as other materials. It’s used for flags meant to fly in light to medium winds.

But their flexibility makes up for how fast nylon flags wear out.

They can fly even in the slightest wind and are great for sunny areas. That because nylon flags are lightweight and readily flyin soft breezes.

If you plan to fly your flag in wet conditions, nylon flags also do drain water and dry quickly compared to other materials.

An American flag banner made out of nylon also tends to retain its brilliant sheen for extended periods. The longest-lasting nylon flags are coated with an ultraviolet protection layer so they can withstand harsh sunny conditions as well.

Nylon is the most popular American flag fabric, a favorite among residential and commercial customers.

It’s the most budget-friendly of all the three materials as well—if you are looking for a budget American flag for sale.

Polyester

Polyester is a denser material than nylon. So polyester flags

require more wind to lift compared to nylon flags.

The best polyester flags are also made with a tough 2-ply 100% spun polyester material, and are meant to be durable in windy conditions.

These flags take more wind to lift.

But the 2-ply material used to make polyester flags allows room for wind to flow through the fabric so it won’t shred as easily as nylon or cotton material.

Cotton

Want an excellent material for your indoor American flag banners?

Cotton comes in handy here.

Cotton flag banners are best for indoor use, such as draping caskets during memorials and funeral services.

Flags made of cotton are not weather resistant, though. Exposed to the elements for some time, they tend to wrinkle easily, wash out much quicker than polyester and nylonflags, and need more maintenance than both to last a while.

Cotton is a traditional natural fiber. American flag banners made out of cotton are more likely to fade, stain, shrink, and lose shape when hung outside.

So cotton is not the best flag material for use in outdoor flags.

What Next?

Keep your residential or commercial areas' weather conditions in mind before buying American flag banners.

Also, consider if you need its material to show out your patriotic spirit outdoors or indoors. Nylon and polyester are more suitable for outdoor use than cotton flags.

Nylon retains its vibrant glow for longer compared to the other two flag fabric types. It is also ideal for wet, lightly windy conditions, and if you are looking for a good-quality, budget American flag banner.
