How is the career as a commercial pilot in India?

    08 June 2020

Youngsters love to explore fields that provide opportunities for their harmonious growth and development. On the same lines, a career as a commercial pilot is both a rewarding and adventurous journey. Students love the idea of travelling, meeting new people, learning new cultures, and being a commercial pilot fills those expectations impeccably. In India, the highest governing body of Civil Aviation is the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Students need to abide by the rules laid by the DGCA to get flying wings! Check out more information in this blog, before you get career counselling in Delhi.

How does the career look like?

The career of a transport pilot is a lucrative job as one gets to see so many landscapes and territories. It is regarded as one of the most highly paid jobs across the world. Pilots get a lot of respect from everyone since it’s a big responsibility to take people from one place to another by air. Given that, often flying is considered to be a risky job since it’s a machine one is handling after all, and that too when airborne. As the tourism and hospitality rise, the aviation sector too sees a good demand year-on-year.

What are the qualifications to be a pilot?

In India, the students need to have at least 50% score in class 12th board examinations in both Physics and Mathematics. After that, they can get their medical tests done, and put their application in the DGCA to get a Computer No. (i.e., the file no. registered against the name of a given candidate). Then starts the journey of a student to pass exams mandatory for pilot training. These are the theory exams, which a student must pass. It is recommended that students take the exams first before beginning their practical flying training.

The process looks interesting, and to add more value to it, universities across the globe have dedicated specialised programmes to help pilot candidates get the first-hand experience of the job. In India, the most popular ones that candidates need to crack are IGRUA (Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academi),  National Flying Training Institute (NFTI), Madhya Pradesh Flying Club amongst others. Some flying schools also offer a BSc in Aviation / Aeronautics in India.
