How To Measure State Of Charge in A Vehicle Battery

Even though it is the car engine that burns the fuel to convert energy into something that can move the wheels, we need to remember that a car has other energy requirements too. The lights, air-conditioner, and other equipment fitted inside a car run on electricity which they get from the car battery. It is to note that the car battery is also responsible for providing electricity to the spark plug which helps in the ignition. If your car battery dies off, your car will not be able to start. Therefore, it is important for you to engage in regular maintenance.

Car batteries are not demanding. However, they will anyway require your complete attention at least once a year. Usually, they run perfectly but their functionality is highly dependent on the weather conditions. A battery that functions well at a warm temperature can break down when the temperature lows down. That is why we suggest that the best time to engage in maintenance is once during the fall. The team at Tamworth diesel specialists at Car Battery Tamworth repairs. You can drive into our workshop and we will look after the rest. Vehicle-related products are services are our speciality and expertise.

Safety notice

Safety precedes everything else. Hence, please note if you have anon-sealed battery then you must use a good quality temperature compensating hydrometer. The floating ball and the gauge are two basic types of hydrometers that can be used. While the gauge type is easier to read (because it does not involve the need to decipher coloured balls), the floating ball can make reading complicated. If you wish to test a sealed battery, you require a digital voltmeter with 0.5 percent accuracy. Remember, Analog voltmeter does not command the capacity to accurately measure the millivolt differences.

Inspection

The first step is to look for usual problems issues like loose or broken alternator belt, low electrolyte levels, dirty or wet top, corroded or swollen cables, corroded terminal mating surfaces or battery posts, loose hold-down clamps, loose cable terminals, or a leaking or damaged battery case. If not working properly, these components need to be replaced or repaired.

Measure the State-of-Charge

There are two steps that precede measuring the State-of-Charge. There are recharging the battery fully and removing the surface charge. The letter needs to be done because if the surface charge is not removedthen there is a possibility that your battery might appear good when it is bad and vice versa. In order to measure the battery’s state-of-charge with the battery’s electrolyte temperature at 80 F, you need a temperature compensation table. Such a table assumes that a 1.265 specific gravity cell average and 12.65 VDC Open CircuitVoltage reading for a fully charged, wet, lead-acid battery.

You will need to use the compensation table again if the electrolyte temperature is not 80 F. It is because the Open Circuit Voltage specific Gravity readings need to be adjusted. The manufacturer specifications also need to be checked because the Specific Gravity or Open Circuit Voltage readings for a battery at 100 percent state-of-charge will vary by plate chemistry.
