Understanding the Basics of Epoxy Adhesives

    15 November 2019

Epoxy adhesives are the preferred adhesives for a wide number of sealing and bonding applications. The strength and reliability of this form are the reasons for making epoxy an adhesive of choice for outdoor installations as well as structural applications.

However, the term epoxy is a comprehensive term that includes varied types of adhesives differing in their curing time, strength and physical properties into its fold. Some epoxy types are useful for bonding surfaces like fiberglass, plastic, metal, ceramic while others may prove useful for different surfaces. Understanding the different types of epoxies and their functions is very important before their use.

    Epoxies- Unlike Other Glue Types

Epoxy adhesives involve combining a hardening substance with the resin for lending maximum strength to the bond. Up to the introduction of epoxies there were no adhesives that could bond dissimilar materials like wood and metal or non-porous substances like glass. But the synthetic components of epoxies offer this functionality with great ease.

Epoxy adhesives are available in either colored or transparent form and possess gel-like thickness. They are chemical and heat resistant. But they can lose their adhesive quality if constantly immersed or exposed to water. However, the waterproof variety is also available and they prove highly effective for marine applications.

    Two- part & One-component Systems

Epoxies can take two forms; one component or two-component systems. The one-part epoxies available in the market offer ease of use as they need to be squeezed out from a tube. But they offer less flexibility and hence, have restricted usage.

A majority of epoxies comprise the two-component systems which involve usage of two components, both of which are in a paste form. The two-component systems are more versatile due to their flexibility. Each of the two components has to be combined in identical volumes so as to obtain the desired consistency and strong bonding. The curing times range from a few minutes to few hours from its application. It is necessary to keep all things ready before mixing the two components as you may sometimes have very less time to get things done before completion of the reaction.

    Cautionary Tips

Following the instructions on the packet is necessary to achieve the desired results.

It is necessary to select the right adhesive as an unsuitable adhesive can cause damage to the surface and foil future bonding attempts.

The area on which you will apply the epoxy has to cleaned of any dirt or debris as otherwise it can enter into the adhesive.

Be careful while applying the epoxy as it can cause great harm if it gets on your skin.

Sourcing your Purchase from Reputed Manufacturers

The varied types of epoxies can be obtained through any online store or physical store but whichever source you choose it is essential to ascertain the reputation of the manufacturer. Reputed manufacturers like Parson Adhesives can guarantee the quality of the product and ensure that the bonding on your application lasts for long times to come. The customer representatives of reputed manufacturers can guide you well on selecting the best adhesive fit for your application.
