5 Common Causes of Auto Paint Damage and How To Fix It

    18 April 2019

As the world of technology has grown, so have the modes of transportation available for people to use that allow them to travel from one destination to the next. The modes of transportation that have become available that allow people to travel to various locations include cars, planes, trains, motorcycles, and even more. Cars, though, are the most popularized form of transportation in the modern world and provide people with different types for choose from, ranging from smart cars to large four-by-four trucks. The reason for their popularity is due to the fact that they provide people an easy way to get to and from work, school, and anywhere else they may need to travel to. Due to the fact that most of these vehicles are utilized on a daily basis, the coat of paint on the outside of the car can become damaged. Unfortunately, these damages are unavoidable, even though car paints have become manufactured to have extreme durability. While some coats of paint will naturally fade and crack as time goes on, there are also other factors that can influence the way that a car’s paint job looks. Here are three common causes of auto paint damage and how to fix it with products like the auto paint scratch remover.

    Bird Droppings

Unbeknownst to many people, bird droppings can be damaging to their motor vehicle’s coat of paint. Not only are these droppings a pesky problem that can cause a car to look unclean, but it also has the ability to ruin the surface layer of the paint. The explanation for why these droppings can be so damaging lies within science. A bird’s deposit of poop contains a lower pH level, anywhere between three to four point five, which is quite acidic on a pH scale of one to fourteen with seven being the neutral level. This means that the droppings can be extremely corrosive and break down the wax coating or paint sealant that was placed on top of a car’s paint job. As it breaks down these layers, it eventually begins to cut through the paint. One particular issue with bird droppings is that there are two types: topical stain etching and fractured/wrinkled etching. Topical stain etching is a common type of dropping that is shallow and faded, which allows it to easily be removed. One can get rid of this stain by simply washing it off. However, with the fractured/wrinkled etching, it is a bit more difficult. While it is important to wash off the dropping, the stain on the base coat must be removed carefully to prevent further fracturing. Auto paint scratch removers are particularly helpful in fixing the stain if it is caught early on. With either type of bird dropping, though, it should be washed off as soon as the dropping occurs.

    Temperature Fluctuations

No matter where you live and the current season, whether it be winter or summer, there are temperature fluctuations that can damage the car. The paint job of a motor vehicle will expand and contract in response to changes in the air like if one day it is particularly humid and then windy the next, which occurs often throughout the spring season. However, the most damaging type of temperature fluctuation is when it occurs in rapid succession from hot to cold or vice versa. For example, if during an extremely cold day in the winter season you take the car through a heated car wash and then back into the cold, the car’s paint job will quickly expand then contract in response. As time goes on, and more instances of this occur, small cracks/openings allow for the infiltration of moisture, salt, and other chemicals. These things can cause accelerated rusting of the car and deterioration of the overall paint job. Like with the bird droppings, these cracks can be fixed using a scratch remover specifically meant for the paint jobs of motor vehicles. It is difficult to keep a car from experiencing temperature fluctuations but by fixing the cracks and openings in the paint as soon as it occurs, then it can prevent further deterioration of the paint job.

    Sharp Objects

It is no surprise that sharp objects can be damaging to the paint job of a car due to the fact that sharp objects are damaging to the majority of things. Avoiding sharp objects may seem like an easy thing to do but it is, as a matter of fact, quite difficult. The reason for why many people find it challenging to avoid these things is due to the conditions that the car often go through, whether it be while driving or while parked in the garage of one’s home. While driving a car, one cannot avoid small stones or rocks from hitting their car, especially when driving on the highway or on unfinished roads. A car is susceptible to damage even when it is sitting in a garage or on a driveway and the reason for why is because someone can accidentally hit the car with a metal object or even experience vandalism with the use of a key, razor, and/or knife. Any of these sharp objects can seriously damage the wax coating of a car which can lead to the exposure of the paint and increase the vulnerability of it chipping. However, with scratch removers, these damaged areas can be repaired by filling in the open areas that these objects caused.
