Youth Bedroom Design: Be Hip, Be Cool, Be In

02 April 2019

When a kid grows, his style and preferences change with him. And a very important element in a growing kid’s life is having his own space. A reality about kids is that there is a need to update their bedroom theme every few years - as a parent, you need to find out how to choose the best theme and turn the redesigning project into a bonding experience.

Here are other reasons why you need to redesign a teenager's bedroom -

  • It is a gift that you can give for the holiday season
  • The teener can feel valued as the project is centered on his likes and interests
  • It is a good way to find out how many more storage spaces need to be set up
  • This is a great way to de-clutter his room without reprimanding him
  • It can also be a teaching moment when his stuff can be put up for donations
  • It is a good way to teach a teenager about responsibility and proper room maintenance (since he will have a sense of ownership)
  • Redesigning calls for more decorative gifts from the parents such as wall stickers, photo frames and throw pillows
  • A lesson on budgeting can also be taught where expensive items can be bought if they are willing to work for them
  • A makeover project can increase the current value of your home

Designing your kid's bedroom is also a good way to unleash both of your creative sides. It is important to take note of the kid’s personality and not the parent’s; hence, the style must be something that won’t let him cringe.

Redesigning a child’s bedroom and turning it into a youth’s space all begins with a theme. What activities does the kid enjoy doing? What is his current favorite color and what sports is he engaged in? His present choice of style should also be considered.

Teenagers express themselves through accessories, piercings, clothing, and jewelry. If this is the case, then you should have no difficulty coming up with the paint, bedding and furniture choices.

Bedroom Furniture for Teeners

The design and size of the room can be obstacles to any parent who is deciding to purchase a new bed. Many teenagers want a unique bed, one that will make them appear hip or cool to their friends.

A nightstand or dresser should also match the overall theme.

If sharing a room with a sibling cannot be avoided, then you might as well buy bunk beds. If the room is large enough, you can buy more than one bed without resorting to bunk beds.

A teenager will also be in need of a study table so that he can work on his assignments and projects in privacy. For teenage girls, it may be necessary to place a makeup stand or a place where a vanity table can be set up.

Sports-themed beds are a natural choice for teenage boys’ bedrooms.

If you are currently on a tight budget, you and your teenage kid can rummage through the attic or the basement and look for furniture pieces that you can redesign. A light-colored paint on an heirloom piece can make it look new in an instant.

You can also make use of methods such as stenciling, sponging or faux painting.

Sit down with your teenager and discuss the furniture that you intend to place inside the room. Consider the sleeping, seating and storage spaces then brainstorm on your ideas. As a parent, you may not find a teenager's suggestion feasible but you should be willing to compromise. After all, the young one is going to be the one that will be stuck inside the room and not you!
