Apart from smart sleep trackers equipped in smartwatches, there are various third-party sleep tracking apps like Sleep++, AutoSleep, Pillow, Sleep Cycle, Heartwatch, etc., that has been getting a lot of appreciation from the users. Despite the existence of these apps, Apple’s Sleep app has always remained reliable and appreciated by all. This software is the first common thing to be on both smartwatch and iPhone.

How to use watchOS 7?

To use the latest watchOS 7, you need a compatible Apple smartwatch, i.e., Apple Watch 3, 4, or 5, and an iPhone running on iOS 14. Although the announcement was made in June this year, the complete development is planned to launch this fall. Until the final launch, you can try the watchOS 7 beta to check the sleep tracking function before anyone else.

How does watchOS 7 work?

The Apple Watch tracks your sleep exactly like the other smart trackers do, i.e., with the help of an in-built accelerometer motion sensor. This sensor had been introduced in Apple watches from the very first launch. It smartly analyzes the difference between your motion and resting position. Then, Apple uses its algorithm to identify when you went to bed, and when you wake up.

Based on the analysis, you will be asked a few questions that will generate an ideal sleep schedule for you. This schedule includes reminders to inform you about the sleep time a few minutes before your bedtime, and your device will switch into the wind-down mode. Using the wind-down mode, you can play soothing music for sleep, open a meditating app, etc. to slow down your mind and eradicate stress before dozing off. It will also turn on the Do Not Disturb mode to stop your screen from interfering with your sleep.

In the morning, it will wake you up and bring the analysis of your sleep on the screen. You can find the summary and sleep data on the Sleep Watch app within watchOS and the iOS Health app under the Sleep subsection. If you’re using the Watch, then you can see the data of up to the past 14 days. Apple Health app (on iOS) users can check the average time spent in bed, time spent in sleeping over a month, average sleep in a week, heart rate during sleep, etc. All of this will help you understand the quality of your overall health.

How to ensure that your device is tracking sleep?

You can use your iPhone and Apple Watch to record the sleeping pattern. If you use the Watch, use the new-in-watchOS-7 Sleep app on your home screen and enable it to track your sleep. The data collected on the Watch is forwarded to iOS Apple Health app. The iPhone users have to set up the Sleep app according to their preferences for tracking sleep. All your Apple devices sync the data automatically to activate sleep during your scheduled bedtime.

How much battery does this feature consume?

To track sleep through the night, make sure that your Watch is charged to at least 30% to enable the app. If the battery is anywhere less than 30%, the Watch will prompt you to keep it on charge before going to bed. According to our analysis, sleep tracking consumed around 15% – 20% of battery on an average.

This data will get you through watchOS 7 like an expert. Use the guide and tips provided above for a better experience.
