How to React in Case of Emergency Landing?

25 January 2019

An emergency landing is one of the last things that passenger would like to happen during the flight. If you are aware enough and know how to exactly navigate in case of an emergency landing ¸then this can mean the real difference between life or death for you. The airlines must also play the airline safety videos during the flight to familiarize the travellers how to react in case of an emergency situation. It can also be a good idea to put illustrated manuals at the back of every seat, providing a guide for the passengers in any unexpected situation. If the travellers carefully listen to the instructions given by the cabin during the safety briefing, they will not only be able to save their lives in case of an emergency landing but can definitely help out a number of co-passengers too.

You must follow these following tips to deal with an emergency landing efficiently:

  • Stay in your seat

The very first request by flight attendants from passengers in such a situation is to cooperate with them by staying in their seats. You must make their job easier by following their instructions, fastening the seatbelt and ensuring that your luggage is not, in any case, blocking the aisle so that there is visibly no obstacle at the time of evacuation

  • Keep your kids close to you

If your kids are sitting far from you and there is enough time, you can request the flight attendants to bring your child close to your seat so that the kids may not get nervous or start crying being away from you, during an emergency landing.

  • Get yourself into position

In case of emergency landing, place your head on your lap so that you can stop yourself from moving around the cabin and keep you braced if the plane comes down on impact.

  • Remove your high heels

Take off your high heels, any cumbersome accessories or excessive clothing that can impede the evacuation process. Make sure to not trip yourself or others during the evacuation process.

  • Reach the oxygen mask only when it is deployed

Oxygen masks are mostly scheduled to be deployed above 10,000 feet altitude, however, the crew can manually deploy the masks if they feel it be essential. If you can’t see the deployed mask, then you probably will not be requiring them at that moment.

  • Be cooperative

Try to calm the passengers who seem to be panicked. Don’t ask an unnecessary question from the cabin crew. They just pass the information they receive from the cockpit, so pestering them just adds to the stress.

  • Stay calm

Keep yourself calm and positive during such a situation. Emergency landing doesn’t necessarily lead to death. Take it just a normal lending process rather than to stress out yourself. The more positive and compose you will be able to keep yourself, the easier it would be to get through this situation.

  • Wait for evacuation

Just like the normal landing, wait for the flight attendants to announce that it’s the time to get up and move. Standing up immediately and jostling the way through the crowd create a sense of urgency leading to an awkward situation. The calmer you are, the easier it would be to evacuate safely without any hassle.

Make proper arrangements for your vehicle before reaching the airport on departure day, to ensure a tension-free start to your journey. Pre-book meet and greet Heathrow to secure parking space for your vehicle while you are away.
