    Varanasi: The Most Ancient City of the World

    Situated on the bank of the river Ganga Varanasi is the prominent sacred city of Hindu. The city is dotted with array of temples which attracts people in large number from all over the world. Especially devotees and pilgrims come to the city to offer prayer at the shrine. It is also believed that the water of Ganga have the power of washing away all of one’s sins. Varanasi is not only associated with Hindu, but it is also associated with Jainism and Buddhism. The city is also the mirror of the age old civilization of India.

    The Ganga Ghats are the main centre of religious activities. People coming to visit this holy city will see the varied rituals and culture of India. In Hinduism it is also believed that those who die and are cremated here get an instant liberation from the cycle of births and re-births. The city has always been the centre of learning and the tradition is still kept alive by the Banaras Hindu University.

    The Ghats

    There are many Ghats where varied rituals are performed, people take bath and in some of the Ghats, bodies are cremated. Visitors coming to the city have always got fascinated with the Ghats of the city which till date shows the real picture of traditional India. The view of the Ghats is panoramic from dawn to the dusk. The Ghats Priests and devotees offer prayers and some people also perform meditation and yoga. Though with the passage of time, most of the Ghats have crumbled, but with the bathers, the importance of Ghats are slowly thriving. Visitors coming to the Ghats grab the spectacular view of temples and other Ghats sailing over the Ganga River.


    Durga Temple


    Located 2 Kms south of the city, Durga Mata temple is the sacred temple of the city. The temple was built in the eighteenth century in a common north Indian style. Devotees coming to the city come at the shire to offer prayer shrine. During Durga puja, the shrine is visited by people from across the world. The temple is also known as Monkey Temple due to many monkeys resides in the surrounding of the temple.


    Bharat Mata Temple

    Located 3Kms west of Godauli this temple is one of the major attractions of tourists. In the temple instead of God and goddesses one will fine surprisingly relief map of whole of Indian subcontinent and Tibetan plateau.


    TulsiManas


    Built in the year 1964 the TulsiManas Temple stands about 150 mtrs south of Durga Mata Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. Innumerable tourists from all over the world visit this temple to offer prayer at the shrine. It is also believed that the great medieval seer, Tulsidas have lived here and have written the great epic “ShriRamcharitamanas”. The walls of the temple are engraved with verse and scenses from the great epic Ramcharitamanas.


    Banaras Hindu University        

                                            

    Founded by PanditMadan Mohan Malviya in 1917, Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest educational centers of India. The University was founded for the study of Sanskrit, Indian art, Culture and Music. The campus also has Bharat Kala Bhavan which has a collection of miniature paintings, sculptures and articles dating back to 15th century. Today Banaras Hindu University is one of the largest residential universities on Asia.

    The city is easily accessible as it is well linked with roadways, railways airways. The city is well connected to Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi by air. The railways from all the main cities and states link the city. Ahmedabad, Cochin, Gwalior, Tripura, Puri, Kolkata, Madras, Mumbai are well linked to Varanasi.
