There are several different ways to check if the tires need to be replaced. The first thing to keep in mind is that the age of the tire does not automatically mean that the tire has to be changed. Otherwise, used Michelin Tires, or any used tire wouldn’t be useful at all.

Tread depth

Less than 1/16 of an inch left in the tread is a warning sign for you to change your tires. This will adversely affect the handling & traction in areas that are wet or slippery & have a higher risk of hydroplaning. The tread depth can be measured with a gauge. The US Lincoln head penny is another way to measure the depth. Place it into the tread grooves with the head downwards. If you can still see the head, then it’s time to get new tires.

How old are they?

While it doesn’t always mean that old tires are worn out, it’s still better to buy tires that are less than 6 years old. Slightly used, 10 year old tires would be the maximum age for buying them used. This longer age margin is acceptable with used Michelin Tires or other top reliable brands. Winter tires are less often used in certain climates & can have plenty of tread left even after 7 or 8 years of age. However, avoid any recalled tires.

Take a closer look

A closer inspection of the tires can tell you if they need to be replaced. Uneven tread wear, damaged sidewalls, damaged valve stems, and too many punctures are indicators that you should look at replacing your tires. When you sense that the ride quality has deteriorated, or when there are vibrations on smooth surfaces, then take a look at the tires. Check with your local mechanic who can confirm whether they’re safe. It’s a good idea to check the tires before you set out for a long drive. Driving in adverse conditions 

If the type of environment you drive in is more severe, then keep a closer eye on the condition of your tires. They can wear down faster, and have a greater risk of getting damaged in extreme climates and on off-road terrain. Even brand new tires driven under such conditions should also receive periodic checks.
